European Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) met her Italian counterpart Raffaele Fitto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome on Tuesday. During the meeting, European issues and the problem of migration were discussed. As part of her journey, Edtstadler also paid tribute to the recently deceased Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI with a gift of flowers.
It was the first visit by an Austrian government member to the new Italian government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has been in office since October.
At the beginning of the work discussions, the pastor visited St. Peter’s Basilica and paused for prayer at the tombs of St. Peter and Benedict XVI. Edtstadler paid tribute to the pope emeritus, who died on December 31, with a floral arrangement.
“As a professing Catholic, it was important to me today to commemorate the late emeritus Pope Benedict XVI at his grave. Josef Ratzinger was a smart theologian, a believer and a good friend of Austria. I especially remember his visit to Austria 15 years ago” , says Edtstadler.
