After a four-day search, animal rights activists captured and euthanized an escaping tiger near the South African economic metropolis of Johannesburg. The cat, which escaped from private property in the suburb of Walkerville on Saturday night, seriously injured a man and attacked and killed several animals.
The tiger was discovered on a farm Wednesday morning after killing livestock there. “We had to prioritize the safety of people and other animals,” Douglas Wolhuter of the Department of Wildlife Protection said Wednesday.
Ace, tranquilizer darts
Police and animal rights activists had previously unsuccessfully tried to lure and control the eight-year-old female tiger named Sheba with tranquilizer darts.
The 37-year-old man who was attacked by the big cat was treated in an intensive care unit, according to Wolhuter.
According to police, the owners of the female tiger also kept a male at their farm in Walkerville – but this has now been moved to a different location. Tigers do not live in the wild in Africa, but are occasionally kept on private game farms.
