Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the international community of delaying arms deliveries for too long. The Ukrainian army must prevent Russia’s military mobilization, he said in a video address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Wednesday.
“The time that the free world needs to think is used by the terrorist state (Russia) to kill. The supply of Western battle tanks should prevent the next Russian battle tank invasion,” the Ukrainian president said. This also applies to anti-aircraft systems. Hundreds of battle tanks from the West could lead to a successful counter-offensive from a Ukrainian point of view.
Stoltenberg: No indication of peace
At the edge of the WEF in Davos, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg once again called for heavy weapons to be made available to Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin gives no indication that he is for peace. “So he has to realize that he can’t win on the battlefield,” said Stoltenberg. At the “decisive moment of the war” a “significant increase” in arms deliveries is needed.
Meanwhile, the Western Allies are still discussing the possible supply of main battle tanks to the Ukrainian army. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz kept a low profile in Davos about the deliveries of Leopard main battle tanks. After the United States and Great Britain, Germany is already the country that provides the most military aid to Ukraine. One must coordinate with the US and be careful that the war does not develop into a conflict between Russia and NATO.
The Greens submitted a request for main battle tanks
Members of the European Parliament, in turn, asked Scholz to allow supplies of main battle tanks to Ukraine. The Greens tabled a motion to that effect, and the majority agreed. The fact that an EU country’s head of government is asked to do something by name in a European Parliament report is considered unusual – especially since the motion was tabled by a member of the Greens, who is part of the German federal government . However, the report is not legally binding.
The Ukrainian president on Wednesday accused the West of hesitating not only on arms deliveries, but also on sanctions against Russia. In February, several days passed before the first sanctions were imposed. “The world must now and never hesitate,” said Zelenskyj.
Moscow currently controls about 18 percent of Ukraine’s territory, including the Crimean peninsula. The Canadian government, among others, recently promised more weapons to Ukraine, in particular 200 armored vehicles belonging to the senator. The vehicles are intended for the transport of soldiers.
