Three people saved – Burning candle sets whole apartment on fire

Date:

An apartment in the Rif van Hallein district (Tennengau/Salzburg) was robbed from the flames on Saturday night. Firefighters had to free one person from the smoke-filled building. Three people were injured and have been handed over to the emergency services. The fire was caused by a burning candle that the 80-year-old resident had left on a wooden cradle…

Around 1:45 a.m., the shrill signal from the radio detectors woke the Hallein firefighters from their sleep on Saturday. “We were alerted to a fire in a residential building in Rif,” says fire consultant Josef Tschematschar. Along the way, reports of a large fire piled up. Due to this fact and the severe winter driving conditions, the alarm level was raised, so that the comrades from the neighboring Niederalm (Anif/Flachgau) were also alerted.

Housemate rescued by ladder
“When we arrived, the apartment on the first floor was completely ablaze. One person had to be rescued with the help of a ladder. She could not escape through the stairwell due to the thick smoke,” reports Operations Manager Tschematschar. The fire brigade was able to quickly extinguish the fire with a nozzle. Expansion to the second floor could be avoided. A total of three people were treated by the ambulance service and then taken to hospital. After two hours the work for the volunteers was done. The fire was caused by a burning candle that the 80-year-old resident had left on a wooden cradle. The extent of the damage is still unknown.
