Search ended – at least 28 dead after avalanche accident in Tibet

Date:

After Tuesday’s avalanche in Tibet, the death toll has risen to 28. As China’s Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday evening, citing operational management on the ground, search and rescue work ended Friday afternoon.

On Tuesday evening, masses of snow and ice fell on a highway in the town of Nyingchi, 3,040 meters above sea level in southwestern Tibet, also blocking the exit of a tunnel there. The avalanche buried people in their vehicles.

About 1300 helpers in action
China’s disaster relief ministry sent a rescue team to Tibet on Wednesday. Photos showed several excavators and numerous helpers doing searches in deep snow. According to Xinhua, about 1,300 helpers were involved in the rescue work.

Avalanche accidents are not uncommon in the Himalayas. An avalanche killed at least 26 people on a mountaineering expedition in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand in October.
