Travelers to Croatia know this all too well: especially during the holiday season, there are traffic jams at the toll booths on the highways of the Balkan state. These inconveniences must come to an end next year. There is a switch to a barrier-free toll system.
The toll must then be paid by means of a toll box installed in the vehicle or the e-vignette, the news portal “Index” reported on Wednesday, citing Croatian highway operator HAC. An international tender for the new system will be published in February. The costs of the introduction are estimated at around 66 million euros.
The toll is currently being paid Croatia Paid at the toll gates with cash, bank cards or with the electronic “ENC” box, which can be topped up at any time. After the new system comes into effect, the toll stations will disappear.
Compatibility with foreign toll boxes
According to HAC it should be possible in Croatia can also use foreign toll boxes. However, only from those toll system operators with whom HAC will enter into a corresponding agreement. This should be possible as early as next summer for users of the Italian Telepass system.
