Fourteen people have been sentenced to death in Iraq for their part in the mass murder of hundreds of recruits by jihadists nine years ago. As early as 2016, 36 men were hanged for their part in the massacre.
A criminal court in Baghdad has “ordered death sentences on 14 criminal terrorists for their involvement in the 2014 Camp Speicher massacre,” judicial authorities said on Thursday.
Under Iraqi law, convicts have 30 days to appeal the verdict. The decrees authorizing the executions must be signed by the Iraqi president.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), more than 12,000 suspected or convicted members of IS membership are being held in Iraqi prisons in 2018. Official information from the authorities is not yet available.
