A Spittal ski tourer (62) who had been missing since Saturday was found dead in Rennweg on Sunday morning. He fell under a patch of snow and may have caused it himself.
“The ski tourer had been missing since yesterday (Saturday, please note). According to initial information, he traveled alone,” said Michael Unterlerchner, local manager of the Spittal an der Drau mountain rescue service.
Then, on Sunday morning, the sad certainty: the man is dead. He was rescued lifeless by mountain rescue in Rennweg. “The area in question is an avalanche cone,” said Johannes Stoxreiter, chief of operations for the Lieser/Malta Valley mountain rescue service.
Piece of snow probably caused by itself
As now confirmed by the police, the ski tourer who had an accident was a 62-year-old from Spittal who climbed alone towards Tschaneck on Saturday afternoon. “Below the Gontalscharte, at about 1,800 meters above sea level, the ski tourer was carried away and buried by a piece of snow that he probably caused himself,” said the state police.
Because the Spittaler had not come home, his relatives filed a complaint on Sunday, after which a search was started. With the help of the police helicopter, the mountain rescue service and the Alpine police, the 62-year-old was found under the snow masses. “The doctor could only determine the death of the man,” said an official. The investigation has not yet been completed.
