EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell does not rule out fighter jets being supplied to Ukraine, despite the current reluctance of countries such as Germany and the United States. The supply of tanks was also initially very controversial, said the Spaniard on Friday in the run-up to an EU-Ukraine summit in Kiev.
After all, an agreement was reached on the subject of tanks and the “red line” was crossed, according to Borrell. So far, there have been warnings of escalation risks for all arms shipments, he said.
Borrell doesn’t want to take a stand
Borrell declined to comment on whether he himself was in favor of supplying fighter jets. “It’s my job to come to a consensus,” the foreign policy official said. It is not helpful to publicly represent positions that could jeopardize this opportunity.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, among others, was recently open to the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden have so far refused to hand over such weapon systems to the country attacked by Russia.
EU trains extra soldiers
The EU recently announced its intention to double the contingent of the current EU Training Mission for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The new target is to train 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers in EU countries, several EU officials said in Brussels on Wednesday. So far, the goal has been to train about 15,000 soldiers.
