The giant water lily was only identified as a new species last year, and now it’s made it into the Guinness Book of Records — celebrating its homeland of Bolivia. “We are very happy and proud that the water lily is receiving such important recognition,” said Tonchi Ribero, director of La Rinconada Ecopark in Santa Cruz State, Bolivia. “A real ‘Victoria boliviana’ (translated: Bolivian victory).”
“Victoria boliviana” is also the name of the water lily variety. The Guinness World Records only recognized the record the plant set earlier this week, including that of the largest species of giant water lily. Their leaves can reach a diameter of more than three meters.
Two more species of the genus are known
The giant water lily grows in Bolivia and has been preserved in London’s Kew Gardens for nearly 180 years. The discovery of the new species was celebrated as a “botanical wonder of the world” at the time. Until then, only two species of giant water lilies of the genus Victoria were known: Victoria amazonica and Victoria cruziana.
