The tragic situation of those affected in the earthquake zone in Syria and Turkey is shown by the many individual fate that is gradually becoming known. One photo in particular is currently not only going around the world, but through the marrow and bone – it shows a father who just won’t let go of his daughter’s hand, which was buried under the rubble.
There were only a few dramatic moments that radically changed the lives of the people in the Syrian-Turkish border region. While numerous rescue organizations from around the world continue to travel to the region to help, more and more photos and videos are being published of buildings collapsing in seconds, of helpers trying to free people, some with bare hands.
Dad just can’t resist
But few images capture the pain as well as one from Turkey’s Kahramanmaraş region, which shows a father holding his deceased teenage daughter’s hand as rescuers and civilians search the devastated building for possible survivors. Right next to him, a man tries to break through the rubble with a sledgehammer.

Photo goes around the world
Footage of the scene, captured by Turkish photographer Adem Altan, has since gone around the world. It is a “photo that broke the heart of the world,” writes the “Daily Mail,” it is a “tragic photo,” according to the “New York Post,” “El Universo” even speaks of “the most heartbreaking photo of the earthquake in Turkey”. In fact, few photos capture the pain of tragedy as clearly as this one.
Hancer’s apartment was at the epicenter of the earthquake and the girl is just one of thousands of victims. Authorities are now talking about a total of nearly 10,000 deaths – and the number is rising all the time. More than 37,000 people were injured.
