The President of Navarre, Mary Chivite, has announced the tender for the new Belate tunnel with an investment of 95 million euros. The president has stressed that duplicating the tunnels will be the “most relevant and complex” road works in the Foral community in recent years.
Chivite made the announcement at a press conference where she explained the details of the project, accompanied by the Spanish government’s delegate in Navarre, Jose Luis Arasti; the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Bernardo Ciriza; and the general director of Rijkswaterstaat, Pedro Lopez.
The new Belate tunnel will have a length of 2885 meters roughly comparable to that of the current gallery. The doubling of the Belate tunnel will have an implementation period of 45 months.

will be built five emergency galleries, located every 500 meters, which will connect to the existing tunnel. The central gallery will allow the passage of emergency vehicles and the other four will be pedestrianized with access for light vehicles.
Get the two lanes of the new tunnel 3.5 meters wide each with a berm of 3 m on the right in the direction of travel and another 1 m on the left. are projected on both sides of the road two sidewalks of 0.75 meters each. The metre, i.e. the permitted height for vehicles driving in this tunnel, will be 5.5 metres.
The doubling of the Belate tunnels will allow to have one-way galleries with independent circulation directions, which can reduce the number of vehicles circulating through each tube.

The government of Navarre has initiated this legislature in the integral transformation of the road N-121-A to solve the safety problems of this road that connects Pamplona to Iparralde via Irun (Gipuzkoa). The transformation involves, in addition to the split of Belate and Almandoz, the transformation of the road into a 2+1 road.
The 2+1 implementation works started in 2021. So far, the first 17 kilometers of track have been completed, including the sections between Ezkaba and Olabe / Olabe and Lantz. Works are currently being carried out from Oronoz-Mugairi to Sunbilla.
