In addition, it has commissioned an internal audit at both Renfe and Adif to “know in detail and know what happened”. The cause of the problem can be found in the meters published in the Adif network statement, which CAF detected in the preparation of the project.

The Minister of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda of the Spanish Government, Rachel Sanchezannounced “imminent terminations” in both Renfe and Adif this Saturday to “take responsibility” for the error in the dimensions of the Cercanías trains in several autonomous communities, especially in Cantabria and Asturias.

Sánchez spoke to the media during a visit to the town hall of Castro Urdiales (Cantabria) and apologized to the Cantabrian citizens and indicated that this Friday he had a meeting with the President of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, to express “anger and his outrage ” to share. .

“In the next few hours these interruptions will take place and that is why we will give the explanations at that time,” explains Sánchez, who has had an internal audit carried out at both Renfe and Adif to “know in detail and know what happened”.

In addition, he has claimed that “all necessary measures” will be taken to shorten the delay in the delivery of the trains, recalling that they are not being manufactured, but at the design stage. The minister hopes that the design of these trains will be ready before the summer and that manufacturing can begin immediately, although there is no minimum manufacturing time.

meter error

The cause of the problem can be found in the meters published in the statement on the Adif networkwhich Renfe used to describe the technical characteristics of the new trains in a contract it published in 2019 for the purchase of 31 metric gauge trains, intended to renew the fleet of the commuter and medium-distance network, mainly in the north of the country.

In June 2020, Renfe awarded this contract for 258 million euros to CAF, a manufacturer of trains and buses in the Basque Country. When I was preparing the project, CAF realized there was an error in the gauges and that the tracks would not support the trains ordered and he turned it over to his client, Renfe.
