It is every parent’s nightmare: according to police officers from the Stumpergasse police station in Vienna-Mariahilf, a 57-year-old man allegedly tried to take an 8-year-old girl into the grounds of an elementary school around 11 a.m. on Friday. Thanks to two teachers who supervised children playing in the yard, the man released the girl. The man was arrested the same day.
Just thinking about it makes you feel very different: according to the police, the 57-year-old Pole would have grabbed the girl’s hand and tried to take her away. When the two educators became aware of the man, they instructed the man to leave the premises immediately. The man then spat at the women.
Children were immediately brought into the building
After the man left the premises, he allegedly stood there in front of the gate and asked another 8-year-old schoolgirl to come to him. The teachers immediately brought all the children into the school building and alerted the police.
The suspect has now been arrested
The Pole was arrested a short time later during a house search near the Gumpendorfer Straße underground station. During police interrogation, the suspect confessed. He just wanted to ask the children where he could find old iron. He earns his living by collecting scrap iron. The alleged perpetrator was taken to a prison by order of the Vienna public prosecutor’s office. There is also a residence ban against him.
The number of suspected child abduction cases is currently increasing. There have been several incidents in Vienna and Lower Austria in recent days. Police are stepping up patrols in front of schools and appealing to parents.
