The mailbox workshop for the northern region of Lower Austria burned on Tuesday in Zwettl (Lower Austria). Due to the danger of an exploding gas cylinder, a Cobra sniper fired five bullets. The fire was “extinguished” on Wednesday morning and bus operations could resume as planned.
The close-quarters battles against the flames, which nine fire brigades with 15 respiratory protection teams had to fight on Tuesday afternoon in the Postbus garage and workshop in Zwettl, were too dangerous. The risk of explosion from a large gas cylinder from a welding machine kept the Florianis at bay – the Cobra task force was called.
Extremely difficult shooting conditions
However, conditions were extremely difficult; even without clouds of smoke the target was unclear and difficult to see. After five shots and darkness falling, the Florianis used the water cannon against the gas cylinder until it could be cooled to a safe level.
Evade with repairs
ÖBB spokesman Christopher Seif emphasizes that bus operations could resume as planned on Wednesday: “Repairs are being carried out at other Postbus locations with a lot of logistical effort, five workshop employees are affected.” The workshop was completely destroyed, toilets and cold water supply restored in the adjacent building. “The drivers had to spend their breaks on the buses. Thank you for the flexibility,” said Seif.
“Fire out” at 6 o’clock
After repeated checks using thermal images, the fire was declared ‘out’ at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
