Another earthquake was recorded in southeastern Turkey on Saturday evening. Depending on the information, it had a strength of 5.0 to 5.3. It was not immediately known whether damage had been caused or whether there were any injuries.
The earthquake was registered around 10:31 PM local time (8:31 PM CET) in Göksun municipality, Kandilli earthquake station said. The USGS estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.0. In contrast, the state news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported a strength of 5.1, citing information from the civil protection authority Afad. It was not initially known if the new earthquake caused damage or if people were injured.
The municipality of Göksun is located in the province of Kahramanmaras, which was already hit twelve days ago by the earthquake disaster in the Syrian-Turkish border area. The magnitude 7.6 and magnitude 7.7 earthquakes reportedly killed at least 46,000 people, including more than 40,000 in Turkey. A few survivors were rescued from the rubble on Saturday.
Children partly reunited with families
According to government information, 953 children have been reunited with their families in the Turkish part. However, more than 600 children are still unaccompanied and, according to the President’s Office, information about their identities is also missing. The UN also fears violence against women and children currently sleeping outside or in emergency shelters without safe access to toilets. Protection for them needs to be expanded.
Property owners in Turkey were therefore called upon to provide housing for earthquake victims. A website has been set up where owners can offer vacant or unused apartments and houses for free or for a low rent – for a minimum of three months – vice president Fuat Oktay told state broadcaster TRT.
