Spain’s Agriculture Minister, Luis Planas, will meet this Monday with food producers, distributors and sellers to find a solution to the rise in the cost of staple foods.

In the past year the price of food has risen 15%and while the CPI has been on a downward trend for five months, last month saw a 5.6% rebound in the BAC and 6.4% in Navarra.

To give some examples, lemons, potatoes and eggs, in terms of origin, are more than 80% more expensive this year than last year, while oranges have risen 101%. Onions, another staple food, have become 238% more expensive in the past year. Sugar has become more expensive by more than 50% and milk and oil by more than 30%.

After doing the sum, it’s the customer who else notices when making the purchase.

Recently, several proposals have been made to solve it, including Yolanda Díaz’s to put a cap on the shopping cart, in which Unidas Podemos proposed a 14% discount on the price of 20 basic productsgolf VAT reduction imposed by the Spanish government (corresponds to 3 euros less for a purchase of 30 euros).

However, the results don’t seem to be good enough, so Planas will sit down with producers, distributors and food retailers to find solutions.
