The Munich Security Conference ended with a central demand: Ukraine wants more weapons. Should more tanks, more ammunition and fighter jets be delivered? Katia Wagner will discuss this on Wednesday at 8.15 pm with, among others, the Ukrainian ambassador on krone.tv!
A year after the outbreak of war, a new hot phase was about to begin in Ukraine. Russia is said to be planning a new major offensive in the spring and a new recruitment wave is likely. Ukraine is therefore asking for more arms shipments. According to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, “ammunition, artillery and tanks” are needed.
Ukraine also wants controversial weapons
Cluster munitions and phosphorus firearms are also on the wish list. However, the use of the weapons is highly controversial – an international treaty prohibits the use of the banned weapons. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Kubrakov says that the Russian side should also use “weapons of this kind”. He understands the concerns under international law, but this type of ammunition can help resist the attackers. In addition, Ukraine would urgently need fighter jets.
Does China intend to support Russia with arms?
Recently, the US Secretary of State’s warning that China might consider selling arms to Russia has caused concern. In the text, the US had information that China was considering “providing lethal support”. Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesman sharply denied: “We call on the US to seriously consider what it has done itself.” Washington, which has supplied weapons itself since the beginning of the war, is also spreading disinformation.
Leopard main battle tanks in Ukraine in the coming months
After the United States, Germany is Ukraine’s second largest arms supplier. In addition to Mars missile launchers and Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, the federal government agreed after a long battle that 14 Leopard 2-A6 main battle tanks would also be delivered to Ukraine. The first tanks could be in Ukraine within three months. Other Leopard 2 tanks will be supplied by other European countries.
Manifesto calls for negotiations instead of arms deliveries
Meanwhile, there are also critical voices about arms deliveries. In a ‘Manifesto for Peace’, initiators Sahra Wagenknecht and Alice Schwarzer call for negotiations instead of arms deliveries. The ex-politician and women’s rights activist warns of a “slide towards world war and nuclear war” if Putin launches “a maximum counterattack”. The manifesto already has 418,000 statements of support.
