The health of imprisoned former president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has deteriorated. The next step could be intensive care, said the opposition politician’s doctor Tamar Davarashvili.
The patient’s condition becomes serious. According to doctors, he suffers from various neurological disorders and muscle atrophy that are currently threatening his life. Last year, Saakashvili went on a 50-day hunger strike to protest his six-year prison sentence for abuse of office, which human rights groups say is purely politically motivated. The former Georgian president has lost dozens of kilograms since his imprisonment.

In late December, Saakashvili, poorly signed, was connected by video link to a court hearing from the prison hospital. In February, a court in Tbilisi ruled that he should remain in custody despite warnings from his doctors that he could die from massive weight loss. The Georgian authorities, on the other hand, have always ensured that Saakashvili is adequately cared for.
Former governor of Odessa
The pro-Western reform politician was arrested in October 2021 on charges of abuse of office when he returned to his homeland – including in Ukraine – after a long exile. In Ukraine, his positions included President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s reform commissioner and governor of the Odessa region. Saakashvili served as President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013. During his tenure, the 2008 Caucasus War between Georgia and Russia over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in which Georgia was defeated.
