Four young men from Lower Austria are said to have blown up eight cigarette vending machines in the districts of Bruck ad Leitha and Baden and in Vienna. The Lower Austrian police were able to investigate the suspected perpetrators.
According to the state police headquarters in St. Pölten, the value of the loot – tobacco products and cash – was about 5,000 euros. The material damage caused was much higher at over 75,000 euros.
Pyrotechnics exploded
The criminal investigation department of Lower Austria (theft investigation area) had investigated the explosions in Fischamend, twice in Schwechat, in Haslau-Maria Ellend, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and Maria Lanzendorf (each in the Bruck ad Leitha district) and in Trumau (district Baden) since early December 2022) and Vienna-Simmering. According to the police, the perpetrators went to work fully masked when they detonated pyrotechnic objects. The cigarette vending machines were damaged by the force of the blast and some were ripped from their anchorages.
Only the two Austrians confessed to the fact
Two 18-year-old Austrians and a 19-year-old Slovak citizen, all living in Vienna-Simmering, as well as an 18-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina, living in Vienna-Favoriten, were identified as suspects. According to the police, only the two Austrians confessed during the interrogations. The quartet has been reported by the public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg. According to Friday’s information, the perpetrator group is also said to have stolen a license plate in Linz and a gas station fraud in Krems.
