Announcement from Ukraine: – After Putin’s death “we will take back Crimea”

Date:

The Russian offensive war in Ukraine has now been going on for more than a year, but the aggressor’s successes have been limited so far. Inna Sovsun of the Ukrainian liberal opposition party Holos is calling for more weapons to stop the attacks once and for all. She is sure that Crimea can also be reconquered.

“I am actually against weapons,” Ukrainian Rada MP Sovsun clarified to “ntv”, but the current situation in Ukraine makes it necessary to supply more weapons to counter the Russian attacks.

Difficult situation in Bachmut
Above all, the situation in the city of Bakhmut, which has been fiercely fought over for months, is “very, very bad,” Sovsun continued. The battle on the ground is mostly symbolic, but with Russian troops increasingly succeeding in encircling the city, it seems only a matter of time before it is completely taken.

“It is very intense. My partner wrote to me that sometimes they fight in the same house with the Russians,” the politician describes the difficult situation.

Not enough space in shelters for children
Air raid alarms are already a permanent part of the basement. Like so many other Ukrainians, she no longer goes into the basement at every alarm. “If you can sit there for hours and do nothing, you eventually get tired of it. (…) The risk of getting hit is manageable.” Moreover, some schools do not even have enough space to house all the children in the bomb shelters.

In principle, Sovsun hopes that it will be possible to drive the Russian forces out of the entire state again: “An acquaintance told me that he took Ukrainian lessons immediately after hearing the first explosions. If the attacker says you’re a people, but then tries to kill you, it’s not very convincing.”

After Putin’s death, there is “chaos”
There are also “many reasons” why Crimea, annexed in 2014, should remain part of Ukraine. “It is of economic importance and of course it is a launching point for Russian attacks,” Sovsun said. Mariupol could only be destroyed in this way because Crimea is in Russian hands. So there is no security for Ukraine as long as Crimea is occupied.

For Sovsun, the best time for a possible recapture would be “the day after Putin died”. With no follow-up plan, she calculates that such an event would throw Russia “into chaos”. “This will be the best chance. The day after Putin’s death, we will take back Crimea.”

“The Russians have thousands of tanks”
Until then, however, it should be possible to beat off the attacks. “The Russians have thousands of tanks. We don’t need thousands, but at least 300.” The more weapons are delivered, the shorter the war will last, she is sure.

But Western countries should also step up their game when it comes to sanctions: “The Russians are currently building a nuclear power plant in Hungary, so in the EU, in a NATO country. That is a great danger”, she also pleads for a stricter line here.
