After a fire on a high-voltage line, it has become dark in large parts of Argentina. About 20 million people were temporarily without electricity on Wednesday, the newspaper “La Nación” reported, citing the government of the South American country.
For safety reasons, the Atucha I nuclear power plant was taken off the grid after the fire, after which other plants followed. As a result, the power went out in the capital Buenos Aires, the province of the same name and in the provinces of Santa Fe, Córdoba, Mendoza, Tucumán and Salta.
In total, about 40 percent of Argentines were affected by the massive blackout. At the end of midsummer in the southern hemisphere, parts of the country are currently experiencing a heat wave with temperatures of up to 40 degrees.
