A stormy day awaits us in Austria. On Thursday you have to be careful in the west, but also in the east of the country. Gusts of wind are expected with peaks between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour. But the storm also shows what it can do during the weekend.
Geosphere Austria has issued a yellow alert for parts of Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria and Lower Austria, as well as for the state of Vienna. Wind peaks between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour are expected there on Thursday. Especially in the morning and in the morning it can be stormy for a short time in the northern regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. “In the course of the afternoon, the wind decreases considerably,” says meteorologist Thomas Wostal.
Last strong storm a month ago
Wind peaks of at least 70 kilometers per hour occur on average five to fifteen times a year, depending on the region, in the lowlands of northern and eastern Austria, according to Geosphere. “The last stronger storm in Austria was a month ago, with peaks of up to 112 kilometers per hour at the Vienna weather station Hohe Warte and up to 142 at the Feuerkogel (Upper Austria).”
Rain but also sleet showers are expected on Thursday morning, especially on the north side of the Alps. For the south, on the other hand, the experts predict less rain. In the afternoon, the showers decrease everywhere, the sun comes out more often, according to the forecast. Morning temperatures of zero to seven degrees and daily maximums of twelve to 18 degrees are moving into the country, with the highest values announced for the southeast.
Quiet Friday, storm comeback on Saturday
Friday will be a bit quieter for a while. But already in the evening the next rain and snow front will reach western Austria. And the wind will also be stormy again: “In the night on Saturday and on Saturday itself, it will be very windy to stormy again in many regions, with a focus on the north and east of Austria,” it said.
The emergency services have already taken precautions for the storm. “We are prepared for all eventualities,” says Jürgen Figerl of the Vienna Professional Fire Service. The situation is being closely monitored. “However, at the moment we assume that we can handle the weather event with the existing team,” says Figerl.
