The founder of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, explains that his troops have taken the eastern part of the hard-fought city of Bakhmut: “Everything east of the Bakhmutka River is completely under Wagner’s control.”
The battle for Bachmut has been going on for months. The Wagner mercenary group operating there on the Russian side has now surrounded the city from the east, north and south. Nevertheless, Kiev wants to keep the “Fortress Bakhmut”, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized again in his daily video address on Tuesday night.
The report could not be independently confirmed. In the past, similar statements by Prigozhin about combat events had sometimes proved premature.
‘Storm on Bachmut will continue’
The Ukrainian army reported continued attacks by Russia in the Bakhmut region on Wednesday. In the village of Orikhovo-Vasilyvka alone, about 20 kilometers northwest of Bakhmut, there had been more than 30 failed attacks the previous day, the Ukrainian army general staff said. Areas around ten settlements on the front at Bachmut were shelled. “Despite serious casualties (…) the enemy continues to storm Bachmut.”
