The United States has received an order from a US court in New York to seize a Boeing jet belonging to the Russian oil company Rosneft. The Justice Department said the plane could be detained for $25 million for violations of export controls and sanctions against Russia.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York approved the seizure based on violations of export controls and sanctions against Russia, the Justice Department said. Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin, long considered an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been sanctioned by the United States.
US justice speaks of “contraband”
The US-made Boeing 737-7JU aircraft had entered and left Russia at least seven times since the sanctions took effect, according to the Justice Department. “By violating the Commerce Department’s export controls, Rosneft turned its plane into contraband,” said Andrew Adams, a Justice Department official.
