In total, the official statistics of the CAV recorded 9,569 accidents at work in the first three months of 2022. The Basque government emphasizes that most could have been prevented and has launched a new awareness campaign.

Six people died in an accident at work in the Basque Autonomous Community in the first quarter of 2022, according to official statistics. Osalan has registered in total 9569 work accidents 61 of them, seriously.

The Basque government, in the presentation of the new awareness campaign, explained that the accidents occurred “despite all the efforts of each of the parties involved”, while at the same time confirming that “the vast majority of them could have been avoided if the relevant preventive measures were correctly applied”.

According to the data, the most common falls from heights, entrapment by machines, run over, falling from the truck cab, tipping over and cutting. In this sense, Osalan analyzes and proposes measures in light of the evolution of work processes, which “bring new challenges”, but deep down, accidents are “business as usual”.

More construction accidents

The director of Osalan, Lourdes Iscarexplained that accidents in the construction sector have increased and, as explained by the Deputy Minister, Elena Perez, the most common accident in this sector is a fall from a height, which also has the most serious consequences. Every accident has a different cause, but in any case they all happen because prevention measures fail.

The Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security has explained what Osalan’s work is: it is not a statistical or sanctioning body, but a technical one. As he has defended, it is the “most important” occupational safety and health institution in the state, both in terms of the resources it has and the number of employees. On the one hand, it helps companies to take the appropriate measures, on the other it analyzes accidents to adapt the necessary measures.

The state secretary has ‘categorically’ denied that the inspectors will inform the companies when they are going to carry out an inspection. “Usually the inspector comes because there is a previous complaint, but in any case there is no pre-announcement“, he explains. For his part, Iscar has confirmed that the company is “ultimately responsible for everything that happens in the workplace”.

new campaign

At the press conference they emphasized that work should be “safe”, “above all”, and for this they want to “pay attention to all links in the work chain so that everyone pays sufficient attention to these situations from their own responsibility to avoid the injuries they cause. to prevent”.

The campaign slogan, on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, on April 28, will be: I work in a safe environment. so yes “You should only work in safe conditions,” underlines Osalan, adding this message to the main motto: “Put occupational health and safety at the heart of your business

As the institute’s director explained, Osalan addresses society “so that it demands decent working conditions”; companies, so that there is “quality” in preventive action, and have the “necessary tools” for prevention.
