Poland plans to deliver the first Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine very soon. President Andrzej Duda announced this on Thursday after talks with his Czech counterpart Petr Pavel in Warsaw. “In the coming days, we will transfer four planes to Ukraine,” said Duda.
The supply of such weapons from Polish stocks had already been considered a year ago. At the time, however, the government in Warsaw had refused to do so in order not to risk Russian reprisals. As a neighbor of Ukraine, Poland is particularly affected by the consequences of the war.
Other allies remain cautious
Ukraine’s other allies remain cautious about relinquishing fighter jets. Ukraine has repeatedly asked its supporters for Western-type fighter jets to better protect its airspace against Russian attacks.
The Kiev government mainly wants the US-made F-16s, but also the Swedish Gripen and Eurofighter Typhoon. However, fearing an escalation, the US has always refused to supply fighter jets.
