Quickly Determined is only on TV. A week after the mysterious discovery of poison gas in Gmunden in Upper Austria, the police have now filed a report with the public prosecutor’s office in Wels. Namely because of section 181c, which reads “negligent environmentally hazardous waste handling and shipment”.
It was the excitement of the past weekend: the “Krone” announced that the director of a waste disposal company in Pinsdorf had brought a red plastic box with two gas cartridges with the inscription “Phosgene” to the Gmunden police station on Friday morning.
He said he found the two gas canisters with the skull and crossbones on them in a warehouse. As reported, the war gas phosgene is better known under the name Grünkreuz and it cost the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers in the First World War – so very dangerous!
Explosive “gift”
The explosive “gift” was first examined by the experts of the state police and then handed over to the army’s NBC experts, who took the gas cartridges to the Dabsch barracks in Korneuburg (Lower Austria), where they are currently kept.
What’s next?
The public prosecutor’s office in Wels has now received a first report from the executive. “It’s being established because of Section 181c, which is ‘negligent environmentally hazardous handling and shipment of waste,'” says Christoph Weber of the Wels prosecutor’s office: “We will now have the military check that there is still gas in the bottles. As far as I know it certainly looks like it. It is also questionable whether there was any danger at all, because the cartridges are apparently completely leak-proof.”
The case remains interesting, however, because the serial numbers must be able to trace which company originally produced the highly toxic phosgene gas.
