Threatened arrest – Allied country warns Putin against entry

Date:

Is the alliance between Russia and the former Soviet Republic of Armenia on the verge of collapse? A few months after the government in Yerevan banned Russian maneuvers on Armenian territory, a senior politician in the country has now threatened to arrest Vladimir Putin if the Kremlin chief enters Armenia!

The reason for this is the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against the Russian president. Nearly two weeks ago, the court said an arrest warrant had been issued against Putin and the president’s child rights officer, Maria Alexeyevna Lwowa-Belowa, for the “unlawful deportation” of Ukrainian children to Russia. And apparently Armenia sees itself bound by the order of the ICC.

“It would be better for him to stay in his country”
Gagik Melkonyan, MP for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party, said in an interview with factor.am news portal: “If Putin comes to Armenia, he should be arrested. It would be better for him to stay in his country.” Melkonyan pointed out that the Armenian parliament had already started ratifying the Rome Statute, on which the ICC is based.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the leadership in Moscow considers the Armenian plans regarding Roman status “unacceptable”. The arrest warrants were “illegal and legally void,” the ministry said.

Rome Statute also not ratified by US
After Omar al-Bashir of Sudan and Muammar al-Gaddafi of Libya, Putin is only the third head of state to have an ICC arrest warrant issued during his term in office. The Criminal Court is supported by 123 states, including all EU Member States. Besides Russia, the international authority is not recognized by the US, Israel and China, among others.
