After his election defeat at the end of December, Jair Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States. He spent the next three months there while several investigations against the 68-year-old were conducted in his home country. But now the right-wing politician has ended his self-imposed exile in Florida and returned to Brazil. The opposition is happy with the return, but apparently Bolsonaro no longer wants to play such an important role.
According to CNN Brasil, Bolsonaro arrived at Brasilia airport on Thursday. Contrary to expectations, the 68-year-old was not greeted by thousands of supporters, but only by a smaller group, as shown in photos and videos (see above). The right-wing politician went straight to his Liberal party headquarters, where supporters were already waiting. Security measures in the Brazilian capital had been tightened amid fears of violent demonstrations.
Bolsonaro does not want to become opposition leader
The ex-head of state is part of several investigations that could lead to jail terms that could make Bolsonaro permanently ineligible in Brazil’s 2026 presidential election. Before leaving Orlando, Brazil’s leading right-wing figure told CNN Brasil that he did not want to become an opposition leader in his home country. But he remains committed to his party. For example, the 68-year-old wants to travel through Brazil and talk to supporters.
