Destination was Rotterdam – Two tons of cocaine found in banana cargo

Date:

Drug officials in the Dominican Republic have seized the largest amount of cocaine in the country’s history. A spokesperson for the national anti-drug agency DNCDRD reported on Saturday that a total of more than two tons of the drug had been found in a shipment of bananas from Ecuador destined for the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

During the 10-hour operation at the Caucedo port terminal in the city of Boca Chica, authorities seized 2,188 packages, each weighing about a kilogram, which were “suspected to contain cocaine,” it said. This is a record amount of drugs seized at one time. Since the beginning of the year, authorities in the Dominican Republic have seized a total of five tons of drugs.

Drugs hidden in cardboard boxes
The basis of the operation in the port of Boca Chica was also intelligence findings, the DNCDRD said. The cardboard boxes in which the cocaine was hidden were found in a refrigerated container from Ecuador with the port of Rotterdam as its destination.

Drugs are often smuggled in fruit shipments. On March 30, Norwegian police reported the seizure of about 800 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas in Oslo.
