Another case of benefit fraud has come to light in Styria: a 59-year-old Romanian is said to have collected emergency aid for years in Graz for an amount of 21,000 euros, although he rented apartments. Now the suspect has been exposed.
For some time now, detectives in Graz have been investigating the 59-year-old Romanian from Graz following a report of suspicious activities by the Public Employment Service (AMS). Over a period of more than three years (January 2017 to mid-March 2020), he repeatedly submitted emergency aid applications and collected 21,000 euros. However, the 59-year-old hid rental income.
Income from rental of apartments
In the end, the suspicion was confirmed that the Romanian had been the owner of a building with several apartments in Graz for years. The 59-year-old earns income from rental, which means that he is not actually entitled to emergency aid benefits.
The 59-year-old confessed extensively during his interrogation. He is reported to the prosecutor’s office in Graz on suspicion of serious commercial fraud.
