Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stressed that he is ready for a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. It is Hamas that is rejecting an agreement, he said on Sunday evening. At the same time, Netanyahu continues to reject an end to the war.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu has made it clear that we will not leave Gaza until we return all 120 hostages, living and deceased,” his office said. The politician had previously told Israeli broadcaster Channel 14 that the war would only end when the terrorist organization Hamas was no longer in control of the Gaza Strip.
First, the phase of heavy fighting in Rafah in southern Gaza will soon end. The army began operations on the border with Egypt in early May. The last Hamas combat units would be destroyed there. According to the army, 60 to 70 percent of the city area is now under “operational control” of its own troops. Half of the combat units would have been destroyed.
Troops at the border with Lebanon
Within a few weeks, some of the forces could be moved north to the border area with Lebanon, where the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia are constantly firing at each other. The aim is to ensure that the militia withdraws behind the Litani River, as a UN resolution stipulates. If necessary, Israel is ready for a major military operation, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said.
Gallant traveled to the US this weekend. There are now renewed warnings about the risk of an offensive in Lebanon. “Hezbollah has greater capabilities than Hamas. And I would say that Iran would be more inclined to provide more support to Hezbollah,” Air Force Gen. Charles Quinton said on Sunday. The US government is Israel’s most important ally (see video above).
