The US Navy has introduced a new type of warship: the USS Santa Barbara (see video above). This is a huge Independence-class ship with a distinctive trimaran hull that resembles a floating fortress. The ship is used in military operations near the coast and has innovative technologies. A secret “aluminium foil” would provide protection against enemy radar.
The USS Santa Barbara was officially commissioned last weekend at the Ventura County Naval Base in Port Hueneme, California. On Monday, the ship (or LCS-32) left Port Hueneme for San Diego.
Small crew
LCS-32 is the 16th ship of the Independence class. Warships of this type are designed and developed for coastal combat. It is equipped with the latest technology and must be able to be operated by a relatively small crew of between 15 and 50 seamen.
128 meters long, 32 meters wide
The ship is 128 meters long and almost 32 meters wide. A modular construction allows use in different situations.
The ship can, among other things, carry out mine and anti-submarine warfare. This is possible because many systems, such as guns, mini-submarines or drones, are unmanned and computer-controlled.
Also unmanned helicopter on board
The angular outer shape of the hull is intended to protect the ship from enemy radar. Inside, the Santa Barbara is lined with a sort of secret silver “tin foil” designed to keep nothing in and nothing out. With the “Northrop Grumman MQ-8 Fire Scout” there is even an autonomous unmanned helicopter on board ready for use.
MH-60R/S Seahawks helicopters can also land with Marines on deck. The armament on deck consists of eleven missile launchers and a powerful automatic cannon with a caliber of 57 millimetres.
