Nursing education: – “We broke taboos we didn’t know”

Date:

Operations and investigations cannot continue. Beds must be locked. Waiting lists in home care and mobile care. Even before the pandemic, care was planned on edge, now you are in the middle of a supply emergency, says Elisabeth Potzmann, president of the Austrian Health and Nursing Association (OGKV) in the krone.tv Talk with Jana Pasching. According to Potzmann, nursing staff sometimes do superhuman things and go far beyond their limits. However, more and more activities or treatments have to be skipped if there is not enough time left. To change this, politicians are relying, among other things, on nursing education, which has, however, been criticized by professional representatives. “We’re breaking a number of taboos here that we didn’t know before.”

Basically, many young people are interested in the nursing profession. However, the OGVK is critical of nursing education. There are several reasons for this: in addition to the early starting age (from group 9), a health profession, nursing, would now be included in the commercial logic for the first time. “We want healthcare professionals to make ethical decisions and not economic decisions in the sense of ‘does it pay’.”

In general, there would be plenty of opportunities to gain a foothold in nursing. “We are proud of the progression in nursing education.” Potzmann also welcomes nursing with Matura from autumn: “Because we don’t train here in a dead end, but offer young people opportunities.”

‘Have to work up the last three years’
A much bigger problem than training nursing staff is how to keep people in work: the corona pandemic of the past three years has affected everyone and especially those who were at the forefront, Potzmann explains. “I think it is essential that we look back and work through time. I’m a little concerned that that’s not happening and that we’re trying to transition seamlessly into everyday life.
