38 percent of Austrians would at least or sooner use the option of assisted suicide. Conversely, 17 percent reject this for ethical, religious or other reasons, according to an online survey by Marketagent published Wednesday. 37 percent responded that they are not sure about this question and should think more deeply about it. Seven percent declined to answer.
The study, commissioned by the Hospice Movement in Baden, interviewed 1,005 people aged 14 to 79 as part of an online access panel in early March. The legal situation in the field of assisted suicide is known to some extent by about two-thirds of Austrians, at least according to their own assessment: 27 percent answered a corresponding question with “Yes”, 37 percent with “Yes, I think so “. .
New regulation of assisted suicide needed
A ruling by the Constitutional Court (VfGH) in 2020 made it necessary to reorganize assisted suicide, which was previously prohibited. According to the current Death Decree, those who are permanently seriously or terminally ill and wish to make use of assisted suicide can draw up a so-called Death Decree. Explanatory talks with doctors are mandatory. Two doctors must independently confirm that the person wishing to die is capable of making decisions and willing to end their life voluntarily, one of whom must be trained in palliative medicine. The will is drawn up by a notary.
Another outcome of the study: two-thirds would like to spend the rest of their lives at home if they have an incurable disease. 13 percent would opt for a hospice, eleven percent relatives or friends, five percent a nursing home and two percent a hospital (rest: different location).
If you or a loved one are in an exceptional psychological situation or have suicidal thoughts, please contact the telephone pastoral care on telephone number 142. You will also find other crisis telephones and emergency numbers there HERE.
