Three-day exercise – military maneuvers: China sends dire warning to Taiwan

Date:

China is holding another major military exercise around the island. Dozens of aircraft and several warships were involved.

Amid heightened tensions, China had begun a three-day military exercise around the island of Taiwan. A spokesman for China’s People’s Liberation Army said it was a “serious warning” to “separatist forces” in Taiwan.

Bombers and missile boats were mobilized for the military exercise scheduled until Monday. According to the Taiwan Ministry of Defense, 42 fighter jets and eight warships are registered around the island. 29 aircraft had entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone. This is a buffer zone between the island nation and China.

“Undermining peace and stability”
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, which is responsible for relations with Beijing, has strongly criticized the military exercises. These would “undermine peace and stability in the region,” it said. The government is determined to defend national sovereignty and democracy and to continue working closely with like-minded democratic countries. The background to the tensions was a visit by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen to the United States last week. The conflict in Taiwan is a major issue between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.

Macron’s visit to China without result
Parallel to the exercise, the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen to China came to an end. Their attempt to convince Beijing to influence Moscow to begin peace negotiations with Ukraine may have failed. At the end, Macron and Xi had a one-on-one meeting — without von der Leyen.
