The now 15 primates discovered at the beginning of this year at Vienna-Schwechat Airport have found a permanent home in the Czech Republic.
Good news for the monkeys discovered at the beginning of this year at Vienna airport: the strictly protected animals were seized by customs on their way to Malaysia because the necessary documents for their journey could not be submitted and the animals were not microchipped. It soon became clear that this was a case of illegal wildlife trade!
Gewessler has entered into a partnership with Czech zoos
Since then, the two emperor monkeys, the red-bellied tamarin and ten pygmy marmosets (the latter have even had two offspring) have lived in the animal shelter in Vösendorf (Lower Austria). They were well taken care of and fed up there, but it was only a temporary fix. But now a permanent home has been found for the “monkey gang”. Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler started cooperation with Czech zoos, which will take care of the primates from now on.
“I am very happy that the monkeys are safe and that we have been able to arrange a new home for them.” And she is tough on animal smugglers: “Illegal trade in wild animals is not a banal offense, but a crime against the animals and our environment.”
Most monkeys moved over the Easter weekend, two families will follow as soon as their offspring are ready.
