Outrage in Kiev – beheading video: ‘Russia worse than IS’

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a global response to a video showing the alleged beheading of a Ukrainian prisoner of war. “This is a video of Russia as it is,” the head of state emphasized in a video message on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called Russia “worse” than the Islamist terror group IS.

It is absurd that Russia, which is worse than ISIS, presides over the UN Security Council while Russian troops commit atrocities against Ukrainian prisoners of war. “Russian terrorists must be expelled from Ukraine and the UN and held accountable for their crimes,” Kuleba stressed. According to an adviser close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the video “shows the whole essence of the terrorist state of Russia”. According to her, it is also a psychological operation by Russia, which serves to intimidate. “The target audience is not only Ukraine, but Western societies as well,” Daria Zarivna, an adviser to the head of the Ukraine’s president’s office, told Telegram.

Zelenskyy underlined in a video message on his Twitter page: “No one would understand if the leaders of the state did not respond to the video. Action must be taken now!” The disturbing video is extremely blurry and appears to have been shot in summer as the ground is overgrown with plants and shows a suspected Russian fighter slashing the head of a Ukrainian prisoner of war with a knife.

Ukrainian secret service: “We will find these monsters”
A similar video had previously surfaced on social media. It was allegedly filmed by Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group. It shows the decapitated bodies of what are believed to be two Ukrainian soldiers lying on the ground next to a destroyed military vehicle. Russian sources claim that this video came from near Bakhmut.

The Ukrainian secret service has launched the investigation. “We find these monsters. If necessary, we will find them wherever they are: underground or from the outside,” SBU head Vasyl Malyuk promised. The Kremlin said the video was “appalling” and should be checked for authenticity. Pro-Russian Telegram channels hinted that the Ukrainian side could be responsible for the crimes of concealing the dead soldiers’ identities.
