The unemployment rate in the Basque Country rose to 8.7% in the first quarter of the year, two-tenths more than in the fourth quarter of 2022. In the last yearthe unemployment rate has fallen from 9.1% in the first quarter of 2022 to 8.7% in the first quarter of 2023, 0.4 percentage points less.
The number of people standing is estimated this quarter at 92,100 and the number busy people it stands at 960,800, 0.2% less than in the fourth quarter of 2022. Over the past year, the number of people in work increased by 5,600 and the number of unemployed decreased by 3,800.
The data for the first quarter of 2023 of the labor market of the Basque Autonomous Community reflect 2,100 fewer workers and 2,300 more unemployed than the previous quarter, according to data compiled by Eustat.
Due to the evolution of the working population and the unemployed, the Activity rate is 56.3% in the first quarter of the year, 0.1 percentage point less than the previous quarter.
By territories and with respect to the previous quarter, in Biscay occupancy drops by 4,400 people, in Guipuzkoa in 200 and in alava increases by 2500. As for the capitals, in Bilbao the occupancy drops by 200 people; while in Saint Sebastian rises in 1700 and in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2300.
The largest fall in employment was for women (-1,300), while for men it fell by 800. In terms of nationality, those with Spanish nationality fell by 1,500 (-0.2%), while those with a foreign nationality did so in 600 (-0.7%).
Employment is increasing in industry and services and falling in the primary sector and construction
The working population in the Basque Country has decreased by 5,000 people in construction (-8.5%) and in the primary sector by 1,100 (-11.8%); On the other hand, in industry it increased by 400 people (+0.2%) and by 3,600 in services (+0.5%).
The employment rate, calculated as the percentage of working people aged between 16 and 64 over the total of those ages, fell by 0.6 percentage point compared to the previous quarter and stood at 69.1%. This percentage reaches 72.4% in men and 65.9% in women.
