About 1000 brown bears in the Western Carpathians
Brown bears are strictly protected in Europe. According to a study last year based on DNA analysis, about 1,000 specimens of the predator still live in the Slovak Western Carpathians. The Tatra Mountains are considered an important refuge for the large mammals.

Every year dozens of bears become victims of poachers
According to estimates by conservation organizations, dozens of animals become victims of poachers every year. Again and again there are problematic encounters between tourists and animals that have lost their shyness.
