In view of the threat from Russia, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova are pressing for a quick start of accession negotiations with the EU. Moldova’s pro-European government is currently accusing Russia of deliberately destabilizing the country. To counter this, the European Union will send a civilian mission to the country.
The aim is to counter information manipulation and influencing, crisis management and dealing with hybrid threats. The latter includes, for example, cyber attacks. “Moldova is one of the countries hardest hit by the fallout from Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday. The EU noted Russia’s increasing and persistent attempts to destabilize Moldova.
In June 2022, the EU declared Moldova a candidate to join the EU along with Ukraine. Located between Romania and Ukraine, the country with about 2.6 million inhabitants is one of the poorest in Europe. Russian soldiers have been stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria since the 1990s. In February, Moscow threatened “retaliation” if Ukrainian troops “provoked” Russian troops stationed in Transnistria.
The president calls for a large gathering
Almost two weeks ago, Moldovan President Maia Sandu called for a major pro-European rally in the capital Chisinau in a televised address. So far, thanks to the protests financed “with black money”, only the voices of the pro-Russian forces have been heard – it is time that “the world finally hears the voices of the many”, namely the Moldovan pro-Europeans, Sandu said. According to reports, the rally will take place on May 21.
