From Austria – 45 kilos of opium poppies smuggled to Italy

Date:

An Indian woman (49) smuggled no less than 45 kilos of dried poppies from Austria to Italy. The Italian police were able to arrest and detain the woman with five large suitcases at the train station in Rome on Wednesday.

She had previously been reported by a taxi driver who had accompanied the woman home from the train station more often in recent weeks and had become suspicious of the large suitcase. During the check, the police discovered the poppies, the Roman daily Il Messaggero reported on Wednesday.

Acts like heroin
Each tuber, emptied and dried, contains a drug substance that acts like heroin. Alternatively, the tuber can also be smoked. In Italy, the use of this drug is particularly widespread, especially in foreign communities. The woman was placed under house arrest.

Bought legally in Austria
The tubers had previously been legally purchased in Austria because they are used as decorative material, the woman herself justified. In the past, large quantities of poppy seeds smuggled into Italy were seized by the border police in Tarvisio.
