After the tiresome affair of free-range eggs, which mutate into free-range eggs as the chickens cackling around in a pasture with a solar system, there is now good news in the 20-year-old “jam dispute” with the EU. In addition, there are finally sensible rules against food waste – also for “ugly” fruit and vegetables.
The egg (the EU) once again wanted to be smarter than the chicken (the farmers) by initially leading well-intentioned regulations to the absurd. As reported, the corresponding EU egg market regulation has mandated a dual-use ban for happy hens’ range areas. In concrete terms, this means that if a photovoltaic installation is installed there, the eggs may no longer be sold as free-range eggs, even if the chickens live outside. When the “Krone” drew attention to this absurdity, the Austrian representation of the EU Commission reacted somewhat “sniffed” in a newsletter.
