An Italian Air Force pilot crashed a small plane near Udine on Saturday night. Allesio Ghersi, 34, and a relative who was on the plane with him have died.
The Pioneer 300 machine crashed shortly after take-off in front of an airfield in Campoformido in Italy’s Udine province, Italian media reported. Witnesses saw a cloud of smoke and alerted authorities. The plane crashed into a steep mountainous area that rescue crews could only reach on foot.
A rescue helicopter later arrived at the scene of the accident. The two occupants could only be pulled out of the burnt-out wreck dead. It was not immediately known why the small plane crashed.
Experienced pilot
Originally from Piedmont in northern Italy, Ghersi was considered an accomplished pilot. The father of two small children was a member of the Italian Air Force’s “Frecce Tricolori” aerobatic team. Representatives offered their condolences to the pilot’s family.
