A four-year-old girl fell into the sea between Tunisia and Lampedusa (Italy) on Saturday and drowned. The crew of a Tunisian fishing boat had previously tried to steal the engine of the other boat on which the child was traveling with 34 people on board.
The body could not be recovered. The migrants on board the boat came from Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast (Ivory Coast), Guinea and Sierra Leone. They were later rescued by an Italian Coast Guard vessel and taken to Lampedusa. The girl had drowned in Italian waters. A Tunisian fishing boat had tried to steal the boat’s engine.
To clarify the events, police officers questioned all adults on Sunday. Since Saturday, 373 migrants have already arrived on the island of Lampedusa. There are about 2000 people in the hotspot. Reception facilities are under increasing pressure, according to the Ministry of the Interior in Rome. At 40,000, the number of people seeking protection who arrived in Italy this year is four times that of the same period in 2022
