Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied Russian allegations of an attempted assassination of President Vladimir Putin. “We didn’t attack Putin or Moscow,” Zelensky told reporters in Helsinki. Russia claims it shot down two drones in an attempt to attack the Kremlin.
“We are not attacking Putin, we will leave that to a tribunal,” Zelensky said on Wednesday. The president of Ukraine is currently in Finland for talks. Russia accuses Ukraine of trying to kill Putin with a drone strike.
Only Russian propaganda?
Zelenskyy’s adviser Mykhailo Podoliak had previously stated that Ukraine had nothing to do with it. He suggested that the incident was a matter of Russian tactics. Such an approach would not benefit Ukraine on the battlefield and would only push Russia to take “more radical measures”. Russia’s statement may indicate that it is preparing for a major “terrorist” attack on Ukraine in the coming days.
Debris from the drones fell on the Kremlin grounds, according to Russian authorities. There were no casualties and no damage to buildings. In a video shared on social media, faint plumes of smoke could be seen over the Kremlin. The authenticity of the video could not be confirmed at first.
Blinking: “Use with care”
Regarding the authenticity of the information from Russia, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said anything coming out of the Kremlin should be treated with great caution. When asked whether the US would criticize Ukraine if it decided to launch a counter-attack on Russian territory, Blinken replied that decisions about the defense of the country were entirely up to Ukraine.
A US official, who declined to be named, said information from Moscow is still under scrutiny. “If anything, there was no warning.”
