In the Ukrainian capital Kiev and the immediate vicinity, an air raid siren was briefly issued on Thursday evening due to an unidentified flying object. Explosions and gunfire were heard in the city center, residents said.
The military authorities asked people to keep calm and go to the bomb shelters. The air defense is in action, it said. The explosions stopped after about 15 to 20 minutes. A plume of black smoke hung over the city.
Mayor Klitschko: “Explosions and fires”
“The enemy drone has been shot down,” President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff said. Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko reported “explosions and fires” in the Solomjanskyj district and warned people about possible debris from drones. The city’s military administration said air defenses had been deployed over Kiev.
Soldiers speak of “high intensity of attacks”
According to Ukrainian information, Russia had already deployed up to 24 combat drones against targets in Ukraine on Thursday evening, of which 18 were shot down. The head of Kiev’s military administration said the capital had not experienced “such an intensity of attacks” since the beginning of the year as it has in recent days.
Russian troops continued their attacks in eastern Ukraine on Thursday. Once again, the city of Bakhmut was at the center of events, the Ukrainian General Staff reported in its situation report in the evening. In Bakhmut, Limansk and Marjinka, a total of about 50 Russian attacks were repelled.
Heavy fighting for Bakhmut continues
“Russian occupiers continue to suffer heavy losses on the battlefield and all medical facilities in the temporarily occupied areas are overflowing with wounded occupiers,” it said. The information provided by the military could not be independently verified.
Russia has been waging an offensive war against Ukraine since February last year. For months Russian troops have been trying to expand the areas they occupy in eastern Ukraine.
