Accomplices found – caught smuggler earned 110,000 euros

The smugglers’ trade is still going well: at the end of January, a 37-year-old Kyrgyz man was arrested in Ilz (Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district) who is suspected of bringing numerous illegally arrived migrants to Austria and Germany. A 20-year-old accomplice has also been identified. He is awaiting extradition in a Czech prison.

It was not until January 21 that officials from the Aliens and Border Police caught a tout driving a car with Czech license plates during checks on the A2 in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district. In the vehicle of the 37-year-old from Kyrgyzstan were six migrants who had illegally entered Austria with him. Due to the strong suspicion of smuggling, the 37-year-old was immediately arrested.

More than 70 people transported
During further investigation, it was determined that the suspect may have made at least 13 more trips by tow truck (two to Austria and eleven to Germany). The 37-year-old must have transported more than 70 people. According to the current state of the investigation, he could have received a smuggler’s fee of at least 110,000 euros.

During several interrogations, the officers were also able to establish the identity of another suspect. A 20-year-old Uzbekistan is said to have illegally transported other people to Austria with an escort vehicle. The suspect was arrested in the Czech Republic in early April 2023 on another tow truck trip to Germany. He is currently in custody in the Czech Republic and has been requested for his extradition.
