Salzburg Zoo is happy with two offspring in the snow leopard enclosure. The two young animals of the big cats are the first in four years.
“The little ones are developing very well and Malou is a very caring mother,” reports Sabine Grebner, director of Zoo Salzburg.
The two female snow leopards were born on the night of April 2. The mother animal did not leave the side of the offspring for the first few days. Even Father Sayan was not allowed to visit the little ones. Meanwhile, he also got the chance to get to know his daughters. “In the wild, snow leopards are loners and the males have nothing to do with raising their offspring. Sayan and his former partner have already gained experience in handling young animals at our zoo and will certainly contribute to their upbringing,” explains Sabine Grebner.
Zoos for conservation
With the two young animals, for the first time in four years, the Salzburg Zoo has offspring among the big cats, which are native to the high mountains of Central Asia. An important sign for this genus, according to the World Protection Organization’s Red List, there are only between 2710 and 3386 adult snow leopards in their homeland due to poaching and illegal trade. Animals in zoos are becoming increasingly important for species conservation.
